- When we think of education, do we think of sitting in school nine
months every year until we graduate – or do we think of our life
experiences, our pain and our joy? There are many words to describe
education and many forms through which we receive it. The essence lies
with what we take from our instruction and how we apply it to our lives.
The goal is to attain knowledge and wisdom; or is it discipline and
diplomacy for which we strive?
- Life has its own lessons that we can not receive in a classroom. The
“school of hard knocks” is an institution we all attend. Culture and
tradition train and guide us on our path. Many people and places serve
as mentors. Aptitude, opportunity, insight, and common sense depict the
information we receive. Discernment and reason distinguish our
perceptions. It can be said that experience is the best teacher. Is
there an experience that we can not learn from?
- I often wonder what exactly I am supposed to learn and what I am
supposed to teach. It is difficult to achieve such a subjective idea of
education, and harder still, to pass that down to my child. It is
important to learn how to communicate and interact with people. It is
important to learn about science, health, history, and math. But how do
any of these subjects actually train us for life, or help us walk
through it with our heads held high?
- I have come to the conclusion that wisdom is finally realizing that I
don’t know very much, and I know much more than when I thought I knew it
all. My search for higher learning and my quest for knowledge have led
me only to more questions. Learning is a life long process. The most
valuable lessons come from the least expected source – life.
- With direction and guidance I can apply my knowledge to my life
successfully. With reason and discernment, I can weed out all the
negative information that the world sends me. I can respect and honor my
culture and traditions while learning from the mistakes of the past.
Through my experiences, I have hopefully gained common sense. I try to
reserve judgement and perceive the world with compassion and
understanding. I acknowledge my intuition: sensing and believing in my
heart that some things in life are undefined and beyond my comprehension
or logic. My goal is to attain as much knowledge as possible, while
achieving enlightenment. When I get to that place, my education will be
complete.

- According to this survey, I am very strongly a Progressivist when it
comes to Education, with a dash of Existentialism and Perennialism.
- These Philosophies are summed up as:
- Progressivism
- This philosophy holds that the meaning and value of ideas can be found
only in their practical results. Progressivists are generally opposed to
authoritarianism and favor human experience as a basis for knowledge. It
favors the scientific method of teaching and learning.
- Perennialism
- The basic educational view of Perennialism is that the principles of
knowledge are truly timeless or enduring. The focus of learning lies in
activities designed to discipline the mind. Subject matter of a strong
disciplinary nature, like mathematics, languages, logic, the classics,
must be studied.
- Existentialism
- This philosophy concerns itself with individual self-fulfillment. It
views all circumstances as they relate to the individual human being. In
educational practice, it honors divergent thinking as well as the
affective.

- Despite my earliest thoughts of going to college, I did not seriously
start my higher education until 1999 – the year I turned 30. I started out as a Human Services
Major and I loved it. I soon
learned that I would need at least a Masters Degree to attain a career
that I wanted. I completed my
Associates Degree in 3 years and moved on to FAU for my Bachelors.
- I still wasn’t sure what I wanted to be when I grew up, but I enjoyed
the helping fields, like psychology, and discovered a passion for
history.
- I began to realize that my future lied in teaching, but I stuck to my
social science major that allowed me a very broad area of study. I still enjoy various studies and
hope to find a career that will incorporate many interests and skills.
- I recently began my Graduate studies in Educational Leadership, and find
myself loving every minute of it.
I am looking forward to a career in teaching, with my primary
focus on adult education.
|

|
- Temporary Teaching Certificate in Social Science – grades 6 -12
- Employment in Teaching Field – Applying to local secondary schools,
adult education, and other avenues of educating
- My first preference would be High School or Middle School Social
Science/Social Studies – I would also really enjoy a chance to share
some of my women’s studies knowledge – either by starting a women’s
studies program or incorporating a section of history dedicated to
women.
- Finish Educational Leadership Masters in 2 years.
|
10
|
- I have not yet decided if I want to pursue a Specialist/Doctoral Degree
in Educational Leadership, or if I will pursue other areas of Study
- To teach at Community College or Higher Education, I must have more
graduate level credits for the subject/s I hope to teach. So I am also interested in pursuing 2nd
Masters Degree or obtaining the extra credits needed in History,
Women’s Studies, or Social Sciences
|
11
|
- Ideally, I would like to study and eventually teach several social
science subjects at the Community College or University Level and work
on research.
- However, obtaining all the credits and degrees needed is a long process
- Another obstacle is availability -
many of the subjects I would like to study are not available at a
campus close to me. My first
preference would be Women’s Studies, with history and other social
sciences as a very close 2nd - however, those classes are only
available at Boca campus and other universities that are equally far
away. Location availability has
been a constant struggle for me and has limited my choices.
- In my perfect little fantasy world – I would be teaching adults and
continuing my education – obtaining degrees in every subject I enjoy.
- In reality – I am hoping to begin teaching soon, and continue my
education as smoothly as possible.
|
12
|
- I hope to eventually teach a subject I am passionate about at the
Community College or University Level.
- I hope to be involved with leadership and reform in the existing
educational systems.
- I hope to make a difference in the lives of a few by teaching and by
being involved in the decisions that affect many.

- Be the best Mom I can
- Be the best teacher I can be to my daughter and future students
- Be a good activist and be involved in organizing more events
- Inspire others – Pass on the dream
- Buy a house with a pool - During
the last few years, while going to school, my daughter and I have
sacrificed many things - we lived
very humbly in a mobile home on a rented lot - but the recent hurricanes destroyed
the mobile home and we now live with my Mother. It’s a very big dream of mine to own
my own little piece of land and a nice house. It will make all my hard work worth
while. J
