lAccording to this survey, I
am very strongly a Progressivist when it comes to
Education, with a dash of
Existentialism and Perennialism.
l
lThese Philosophies are summed up as:
l
lProgressivism
lThis philosophy holds that the meaning and value of
ideas can be found only in their practical
results. Progressivists are generally opposed to authoritarianism and favor human experience as a basis for knowledge. It favors the
scientific method of teaching and learning.
l
lPerennialism
lThe basic educational view of Perennialism is that the
principles of knowledge are truly timeless
or enduring. The focus of learning lies in activities designed to discipline
the mind. Subject matter of a
strong disciplinary nature, like mathematics, languages, logic, the classics, must be studied.
l
lExistentialism
lThis philosophy concerns itself with individual
self-fulfillment. It views all circumstances as they relate to the individual human being. In
educational practice, it honors divergent thinking as well as the affective.
