McGregor, an American social psychologist, published a book in 1960 called “The Human Side of
Enterprise.”In his book he examined two theories regarding
individual’s behavior and motivation at work. The first model is referred to as Theory X.Theory X assumes that the average human being has an inherent dislike of work and will avoid
it when he/she can.Basically, these workers are there for
a paycheck, lack direction and like to be to be led.Managers of Theory X workers need to use an authoritarian management
style. The second model, McGregor referred to as Theory Y.Theory Y begins with the premise that average human beings like
to work and that they usually accept and often seek responsibility.Managers of Theory Y workers should use a
participative management style.
